Simon s selection theory: Why docility evolves to breed successful altruism
نویسنده
چکیده
In light of the under-explored potential of Simon s theory of altruism, the purpose of the present article is to review his explanation of altruism and to point out some of its implications for behavioural economics and theories of economic organization. In the course of the argument, this article relates Simon s theory of altruism to Hamilton s theory of kinship selection and then proceeds to examine a critical assumption of Simon s model that social organizations know better than individuals. Within the parameters of Simon s own model, the paper suggests how this assumption can be justified. The paper concludes by noting that Simon offered a new and so far under-explored mechanism for the emergence of altruism in biological populations and suggests a controlled experiment to test Simon s explanation against Hamilton s. Finally, it is noteworthy that Simon s theory has immediate implications for the understanding of human nature that invites revision and development of behavioural economics and theories of economic organization. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Davide Secchi Altruism and Selfish Behavior . The Docility Model Revisited 2005 / 08
Herbert A. Simon is widely known for his studies on rationality, artificial intelligence and for his pioneering approach to organizational studies. In one of his latest works, he presented a theory of human interaction, focused on the conflict between the selfish and the altruistic that can be seen as the essence of human relationships. The model is quite ambiguous: (1) it follows a kind of soc...
متن کاملLanguage, Altruism and Docility: How Cultural Learning Can Favour Language Evolution
Human language serves a number of different functions, one of the most prominent being communicating about relevant features of the environment. From the point of view of the speaker, if the communicated information is advantageous for the hearer but not for the speaker, this is an altruistic use of language, and, as such, it requires an explanation of its evolution. Simon 1990 proposed an expl...
متن کاملCan natural selection favour altruism between species?
Darwin suggested that the discovery of altruism between species would annihilate his theory of natural selection. However, it has not been formally shown whether between-species altruism can evolve by natural selection, or why this could never happen. Here, we develop a spatial population genetic model of two interacting species, showing that indiscriminate between species helping can be favour...
متن کاملModelling Reciprocal Altruism
Biologists rely extensively on the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma game to model reciprocal altruism. After examining the informal conditions necessary for reciprocal altruism, I argue that formal games besides the standard iterated Prisoner's Dilemma meet these conditions. One alternate representation, the modified^Prisoner's Dilemma game, removes a standard but unnecessary condition; the other ga...
متن کاملA Quantitative Test of Hamilton's Rule for the Evolution of Altruism
The evolution of altruism is a fundamental and enduring puzzle in biology. In a seminal paper Hamilton showed that altruism can be selected for when rb - c > 0, where c is the fitness cost to the altruist, b is the fitness benefit to the beneficiary, and r is their genetic relatedness. While many studies have provided qualitative support for Hamilton's rule, quantitative tests have not yet been...
